Our Purpose

It has long been documented that 18% to 30% of all firefighters meet the criteria for a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Suicide is the leading cause of death among police officers and the rate of substance abuse among first responders is over twice that of the general public. These are the very men and women that put their lives on the line for us every day, so that we may live lives of safety and peace and yet they themselves are in desperate need of being saved.

The purpose of Public Safety Prayer Partners is to assign our community’s Firefighters and Police Officers to a member of our church who will pray for them daily. The Apostle Paul instructed us to hold our public servants up in prayer.

First of all, then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all the people, for kings and all those who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
— 1 Timothy 2: 1-2

“WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT”

This Public Safety Prayer Partner Ministry is dedicated to Firefighter Mike Ondra, a dear friend and brother in Christ. After graduating from the Detroit Fire Academy in 1971, Mike served out his 28-year fire service career with the Shelby Township Fire Department. He was one of the first paramedics in the State of Michigan and was instrumental in introducing fire based advanced life support to Michigan residents. His commitment to protecting our community continued until his retirement in 1998. Mike’s heart for serving did not end with his retirement. He was active in ministry as a member of Shelby Bible Church for 27 years. He was deeply involved in the worship and prayer ministries. With a passion for music, he contributed by singing in the choir and played the horn and trumpet in the brass ensemble. His dedication to his Faith, his family and the fire service has left a lasting impact on all those who knew him.
